Hi everyone I would just like to ask is anyone is suffering from muscle loss? I know I have had RA for a long time but in the past few months my arms and legs have gone like jelly.I do feel I have no strength at times but the rest of me is fine it's just arms and legs.Sick of it now because no short sleeves for me when it is hot and shorts life can't get any betterThumbDown

Hi Mags

I'm wondering whether you can arrange to see a physio? Mine devised an exercise programme for me when I was wheelchair bound for the first 6 years and my muscles were and still are fine. It wasn't easy, and I had to be very disciplined but it really really helped.

Ask your GP and see what he says.

Hi Mags

I haven't come across muscle loss and have had RA for 9 years. I can't give you any advice I'm afraid except to speak to your doctor about it. It might be meds or an unrelated condition. Get it checked out. Let me know how you get on

Hi Mags,

I'm a woodwind player musician, still fairly newly diagnosed (Nov 2010, symptoms from July 2010 whilst on tour!) and before I realised what was causing the swelling in my fingers rested my hand and arm a lot as repetitive strain can be deadly to musical careers. By the time I was diagnosed I had very little strength in both hands and arms, I couldn't really play, and was referred to OT/Hand Therapy. They were brilliant and as well as manipulating my hands during appointments gave me exercises to do and stretches to help keep flexible and comfortable. I'm currently playing a show - so it must have worked!
I really recommend physio/occupational therapy etc.

Hi Mags i agree with the others, probaly the best thing would be to see a physio, maybe you can access one through your rheumy team. I remember you being from Manchester and wondered which hospital you are under, the rheummy physio at Oldham/West Pennine Trust is really good and helpful and sympathetic.

Hi Mags,I had muscle wastage on the top of both arms, very painful too.My GP arranged for me to have physio for several weeks and that did help and I also have exercises to do at home. When the muscles were painful I didn't want to move the arms too much but the physio instructor told me that exercise will help build up the muscles again. and I had to try and work through the pain. Hi Mags and Brenda

Since I got RA two years ago, commenced treatment some nine months later when it was diagnosed I have always suffered really badly in my shoulders and upper arms too. The very first sign was severe pain in my left upper arm and thought I had pulled a muscle or something. I have had quite a lot of muscle wastage and hopefully get some of it back when I get under control and can exercise more, I still try to do as much as I can, as you know Brenda it is really painful and I try to work through it.

Julia x

Hi Mags,

You don't say what medication you are on. If like me you are on steroids you will have a reduction in muscle strength, it
does what it says on the tin (packet under side effects) as they say. Sorry not a lot of help
My physio says there are few excercises you can do in this case and recommends keep on trying to do as much as possible
like walking and just using your hands even if very painful. Mind you its easy for her to talk.
